Groundnuts
Introduction Groundnuts are the most edible nuts in the world. They are one of the most cultivated crops in India. There are several benefits of groundnuts that contribute to our health. Groundnuts are high in fat, protein and fibre. Groundnuts are free from cholesterol and contain less than 20% saturated fatty acids. They also contain 30% linoleic acid, which is immunomodulatory and anti-cholesterol.
There are many varieties of groundnuts cultivated in India. Here are a few amongst them.
BOLD
Bold peanuts are also known as Virginia peanuts. It is known for its big size and sweet taste. It is the most cultivated type of groundnut in India. It has a high oil extraction capacity of
around 51%. Bold peanuts are mostly used for culinary applications.
GJG-22 is a bold type of peanut but it has a better immune system compared to other bold peanut varieties. It has better oil extraction than others, around 53%. It is ideally used for snacks and peanut
butter applications.
Java
Java peanuts are also known as Spanish peanuts. It has a small size compared to other types of peanuts. It has the highest oil extraction compared to other varieties.
TG-37, GJG-32, J-24, etc., are varieties of Java peanuts
GJG-32 is a type of java peanuts. It is small in size and a little bitter in taste. It has more production per kg than other types of peanuts. It has the highest production among all groundnut varieties. It has a good immune system. It has the highest oil extraction capacity 54%.
GIRNAR-4
The Girnar-4 groundnut variety was developed by ICAR-Directorate of groundnut research in collaboration with the (ICRISAT) international crops research institute for the semi-arid tropics. It has a high immune system and around 53% oil capacity in which 80% is Olic oil and the rest 20% is linoleic oil. Olic oil is very good for the heart. It has a light pink colour and a sweet taste, with medium to high seed size.
KADIRI-9
Another noteworthy groundnut variety from Andhra Pradesh is Kadiri-9. These groundnuts boast large kernels a light-coloured skin and excellent oil extraction capacity. Kadiri-9 groundnuts are highly sought after for oil extraction purposes and also utilised in the creation of roasted snacks, sweets and confectioneries, elevating the taste and texture of these delectable treats.
